Add captions and subtitles

Because Eddie has word-level timing from the transcript, its captions land on the beat — each word can highlight as it's spoken.

Add captions

Prompt: "Add captions." Eddie builds a caption track timed to the transcript and shows it live in the player. Or use the ✨ on the Captions lane of the timeline (in Chat mode, an empty lane also shows a Generate captions button).

Style them

Ask for the look you want:

• "Bigger captions" / "captions at the bottom".
• "Highlight each word as it's spoken" — karaoke style.
• With a brand kit attached: "use our brand font for the captions."
• "Make Speaker 2's captions yellow" — each speaker can have their own color. Use the speaker names the transcript shows ("Speaker 2", or the name you gave them). Speakers you don't name keep the caption color, the highlighted word keeps its highlight color, and a caption never mixes two speakers. To change or clear a speaker's color later, open the style menu on the Captions lane: Color by speaker lists each speaker. "Remove the speaker colors" puts every caption back to one color.

Every language, in-script

Eddie transcribes 100+ languages. Burned-in captions draw Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Devanagari text in the right writing system. Cloud MP4 exports also burn captions in the Bengali, Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Sinhala, Georgian, Armenian, Ethiopic (Amharic), Khmer, Lao, Myanmar and Tibetan scripts. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai wrap at the correct character boundaries with bundled Noto fonts — no spaces jammed between characters, no boxes for missing glyphs. Karaoke highlighting follows the script.

Hindi and Devanagari: captions in Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit (the Devanagari script) now burn into MP4 exports with real glyphs, not boxes ("tofu") — a bundled Noto Sans Devanagari face fixed that. One narrower gap remains: the two-part vowel signs ो and ौ (in words like कोई) still draw in storage order rather than visual order, so those specific words can look glyph-scrambled in a burned-in MP4 even though everything else — including most other matras — renders correctly. Right-to-left: Arabic, Urdu, Persian and Hebrew captions burn into cloud MP4s right-to-left, and the karaoke highlight starts at the right end of the line.

Limits: only captions draw the scripts from Bengali to Tibetan and right-to-left text. Titles and motion graphics in them do not render correctly yet. The desktop app's local MP4 export draws these captions from its next release. Until then it refuses a local export whose captions are mostly in these scripts and points you to the cloud MP4. An SRT or VTT subtitle file carries captions in every language.

Captions vs. subtitles

• Captions here are the on-screen, styled, animated text — great for social.
• For a separate subtitle file, an edit with captions has free Captions (.srt) and Captions (.vtt) downloads under Export ▸ All export options… ▸ Video file. Some NLE exports carry captions too; see below.

In export

• MP4 — captions are burned into the video, karaoke highlight and speaker colors included.
• NLE export — it depends on the format. An FCPXML (Final Cut Pro, or Resolve's .fcpxml route) puts each caption card on the timeline as its own editable title, in your caption font, size, color and position. For one title per word or two, ask for fewer words per caption before you export. A Resolve project (.drp) puts the captions on a subtitle track, and a Premiere project (.prproj) puts them on a caption track, both in your caption font, size, position and colors. No editing app gets the word highlight or the background band. Premiere XML and OTIO carry no captions, so use the .srt or .vtt download with them.
