Change captions and speakers yourself

What you can change by hand on the Captions lane and in the transcript, and the one thing you ask Eddie to change: the words.

the playerthekeythingistimingtiming comes from the transcript, so every word lands on the beatburned into MP4 renders · carried into NLE exports

You can change most things about your captions yourself, with no prompt. The one thing you cannot type is a caption's words. Ask Eddie to fix the words.

Find the captions

  1. Open the project and open the edit.
  2. Look at the timeline under the player. The captions are on the row marked C.

Each block on that row is one caption card. Move the pointer over a card to see its words and its start and end time. See The editor explained for the other rows.

Delete a caption

  1. Move the pointer over the caption card.
  2. Click the ✕ on the card.

The card goes away at once. The words stay in the transcript and in the audio.

Change when a caption shows

  • Make it longer or shorter: drag the right edge of the card.
  • Move it: on most edits you can drag the whole card left or right, and drag either edge.

The tooltip on each card says what you can do on that edit.

Change how captions look

Click the Caption style button at the right end of the C row. The menu sets:

  • the look, the font, the size and the casing;
  • the text color and the color of the word being spoken;
  • the position: Bottom, Center or Top;
  • the band behind the text and the entrance animation;
  • Color by speaker: one color for each speaker.

Every change shows in the player at once. See Move captions, and get captions into your editing app for position.

Fix a wrong word

You cannot type into a caption. Captions are built from the transcript, so a fix goes into the transcript. Eddie does that for you, and the captions change with it. The timing of the other words does not change.

Put every fix in one message. Give the time and the right words, for example:

"Fix the captions: at 0:45 it should say 'draw four', and at 2:10 the name is Emily."

Fix a wrong speaker

You can do this yourself, in the transcript:

  1. Select one clip in the source list. Its transcript opens beside the player.
  2. Click the filter icon under the player. The SPEAKERS list opens.
  3. To rename a speaker, click the pencil on the speaker's row.
  4. To move every line of a speaker to another person, click the swap icon (two arrows) on the speaker's row.
  5. To move one block of lines, move the pointer over the lines and click the swap icon beside the speaker name.

Fix a wrong speaker name has every step and its limits.

Caption colors and moved lines

A caption's speaker color follows the speaker of its line. If you move a block of lines to another speaker in the transcript, those captions take the new speaker's color when the change is saved.

If a caption still shows the old color after that:

  • Ask Eddie to set the speaker colors again. It relabels every caption from the transcript as it stands now.
  • Or give both speakers the same color under Color by speaker, or ask Eddie to "remove the speaker colors", which puts every caption back to one color.

Good to know

  • Your changes save with the project. Anyone with the share link sees them.
  • A file you already downloaded does not change. Export again to get your changes.
