Transitions: fades, dissolves and quick accent cuts
Add a fade, a dissolve or an audio crossfade to your edit, and learn where each transition shows up after export.
Most cuts in a good edit are plain cuts. Add a transition where it helps the story. These are the transitions Eddie has.
Fades and dissolves (every workspace)
- Fade in — the edit starts from black.
- Fade out — the edit fades to black.
- Dissolve — one clip dissolves into the next.
Ask Eddie: "fade in at the start and fade to black at the end", or "dissolve between the second and third clips". Or select the ✨ on a clip on V1 and pick the transition for the cut after it.
A fade or dissolve lasts from 0.2 to 3 seconds, and at most half the length of each clip it touches.
Where you see a dissolve. The player and the MP4 show a dissolve as a quick dip through black. Timeline exports (Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, OTIO and EDL) carry a real cross-dissolve. Fades are exact everywhere.
Whip, flash and glitch (some workspaces)
- Whip — a fast motion-blurred pan through the cut, left, right, up or down.
- Flash — a quick bright flash through the cut.
- Glitch — a short color-split jitter. Use it once or twice in an edit at most.
These three are turned on for some workspaces only. If yours does not have them, Eddie says so and changes nothing. They show in the player and in MP4 renders. Timeline exports keep a plain cut in their place.
Audio crossfades
Ask for "an audio crossfade at every cut" to smooth the sound across cuts. It is baked into cloud MP4 renders, and it does not change the picture or the length. The player does not play it. Timeline exports carry their own short crossfades at cuts.
Good to know
- Transitions cost no credits. A prompt run that adds them is billed like any other run.
- Fades, dissolves, whips, flashes and glitches change the picture only. The audio crossfade is the one that changes the sound.
- Export again after you change a transition.
