Remove or delete a source file from a project

How to take an imported file out of a project, for example a clip you imported twice, and what Eddie will not remove.

To take a clip out of one edit, ask Eddie to remove it from that edit. The file stays in the project. This article is about removing the imported file from the project itself.

Ask Eddie

Tell Eddie which file to remove, for example: "I imported interview.mov twice. Remove the extra copy."

Removal takes two steps:

  1. Eddie shows you a plan first, and removes nothing yet. The plan lists every file that would go and how many copies of each filename stay.
  2. Say yes, and Eddie removes them.

When two copies share a filename, name the copy by its number in the source list.

What Eddie will not remove

Eddie refuses the whole request, and removes nothing, when it includes:

  • a file that any edit in the project uses — remove it from those edits first;
  • a camera angle in a multicam group, or another grouped file;
  • the last copy of a filename. Removal is for extra copies, not for the project's only copy of some footage.

Eddie says which file was refused and why.

What removal does not undo

  • Credits already spent importing and analysing the file are not refunded.
  • You cannot put a removed file back yourself. Import it again if you need it.
  • Your own copy of the file, on your computer or in your storage, is not changed.

To remove everything at once, delete the project.
