Import from Shade

Connect Shade to your workspace once, then browse your Shade drives and pull originals straight into Eddie — no local download needed.

If your team keeps its media in Shade, Eddie can read footage from your Shade drives directly. You don't sync the files down to your machine first, and the transfer runs on Eddie's side, so you can close the tab once it starts.

Before you start: connect Shade once

Shade is connected once per workspace, by the workspace owner, with a Shade API key:

  1. In Shade, go to Settings → My account → API keys and create a key.
  2. In Eddie, choose Shade on the import screen and paste the key when asked. You can also connect it from the Integrations screen.

The key has the same access as the Shade user who created it. Everyone in your Eddie workspace can import anything that key can reach, so create it from a Shade account whose access matches what the team should see. Eddie stores the key encrypted and never shows it again.

If you're not the workspace owner and Shade isn't connected yet, the Shade picker asks you to get your workspace owner to connect it.

Import from a Shade drive

  1. On the import screen (New project or Add media in a project), choose Shade.
  2. Pick a Shade workspace and a drive, then browse its folders.
  3. Select the media you want. Your picks stay selected while you move between folders in the same drive. Use Load more when a folder has more files than fit on one page.
  4. Add the selection to the import list, then start the import. Eddie shows the cost, reserves credits, and transcribes and analyzes the footage like any other import.

Changing to a different drive or Shade workspace clears the selection, so pick everything from one drive before switching.

The desktop app's import screen has the same Shade option.

What gets skipped

Eddie imports video, audio and image originals that have finished uploading to Shade. The picker counts anything it can't import and says why:

  • Drafts and local-only files — files still uploading, or that exist only on someone's machine, can't be read from Shade yet.
  • Unsupported formats — non-media files and formats Eddie can't read.
  • Camera RAW that needs a vendor SDK — REDCODE RAW (.r3d), Blackmagic RAW (.braw) and Canon Cinema RAW Light (.crm) can't be read by a cloud import. Make proxies in your NLE and import those, or use the desktop app. See Working with RAW footage.

Good to know

  • Cost — Shade imports are billed on measured footage length. Durations aren't known when you pick, so the cost shows as pending and settles once the footage is measured. See How credits and billing work.
  • Export and relink — the timeline you export references your original file names, so relink it against the same media on your Shade drive. See Export to your editor.

Troubleshooting

  • "Ask your workspace owner to connect Shade in Integrations" — Shade isn't connected for this workspace yet, and only the owner can connect it.
  • The picker stopped working after it used to — the key may have been revoked or expired in Shade. The owner can create a new key and reconnect Shade from the Integrations screen.
  • A folder won't load — choose Retry. Still stuck? See Connect cloud storage.
  • An import sits in processing for a long time — see Import stuck or failed.
