Getting started with Eddie

From footage to a timeline in your editor in four steps: watch what's new in Eddie v4, add your footage, get a first cut, and hand it to your NLE.

Eddie is an assistant editor. It watches every frame of your footage, builds a first cut from what people say, and hands the timeline to the editing app you already use.

Your first project takes four steps. The Getting started card on the home screen tracks them for you and ticks each one off as you finish it.

1. Watch what's new in Eddie v4

A short video on what Eddie v4 does and how to get the most from it. It is split into chapters, so you can jump straight to the part you need. The written version is What's new in Eddie v4.

The video is optional. Skip it and the other steps work the same way.

2. Add your footage

Start with the footage from one shoot: an interview, a podcast, a talking head or a multicam recording.

  1. On the home screen, drag your files onto the dropzone, or click to browse.
  2. Or bring footage in from Google Drive, Dropbox, Frame.io, LucidLink, iconik or a YouTube link with the buttons under the dropzone.
  3. Eddie uploads the files, then transcribes and logs every clip. The project shows how far it has got.

Give Eddie the source footage, not a cut you have already exported. It needs room to make choices.

More detail: Import your footage.

3. Get a first cut

When the import finishes, Eddie opens your new project. Ask for the cut in plain words, and name a length:

"Build a rough cut from these interviews. Pull the strongest answers from each speaker and put them in an order that tells a clear story. Aim for about 3 minutes."

Eddie reads the transcripts, picks the takes and builds the timeline. Then play it from the top. This step is done once you have watched your cut.

To change it, keep talking: "start on the second question", "drop the section about pricing", "remove the long pauses". Every prompt changes the same edit.

Prompting is metered: each run spends credits for the work Eddie does, and every finished run shows what it cost. See How credits and billing work.

More detail: Make your first AI edit and How to prompt Eddie.

4. Hand it to your NLE

When the cut is right, click Export in the project and choose your editing app: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. Eddie sends the timeline, and you carry on editing it there.

  • Footage you imported through the desktop app links to your original files.
  • Footage you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage links to Eddie's proxy media.

You can also render a finished MP4 instead. See Render a finished MP4.

More detail: Export to Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve, Avid and OTIO.

After your first cut

That is the whole loop: bring in a shoot, ask, play, export. From here you can add b-roll, captions, music and colour, or invite your team.
