Export titles and captions with a transparent background (alpha channel)

Eddie's overlays — titles, lower-thirds, captions and motion graphics — don't currently export as a transparent MOV you can composite elsewhere; they bake into MP4 renders or carry into your NLE as editable, opaque elements.

If you're looking to pull just your titles, lower-thirds or captions out as a transparent-background video file (a "alpha channel MOV") to drop over other footage in another tool, that specific export isn't something Eddie offers today.

What actually happens to overlays on export

Overlays — b-roll, titles, motion graphics and captions — sit on their own lanes above your base footage and always render as part of the full picture, not as a separate transparent layer:

  • MP4 renders bake every overlay directly into the picture, opaque, exactly as you see it in the player.
  • NLE exports (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve) bring titles and captions in as real, editable elements on their own tracks — a title clip, a caption or subtitle track — in your chosen font, size, color and position. These are editable once they land in your NLE, but they aren't delivered as a transparent-background file either; they're native title/caption objects in the project.
  • Motion graphics don't carry into NLE exports yet at all — only into MP4 renders and the player.

So there's no single download today that gives you "just the lower-third, with everything else see-through."

What to do instead

  • If you're finishing in an NLE: export the Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve project/timeline. The titles and captions arrive as native, editable text objects on their own track — you can restyle, move or delete them without touching the picture, which solves most of the reasons people look for an alpha export in the first place. See Export to Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve, Avid & OTIO.
  • If you only need the caption text on its own: download the free Captions (.srt) or Captions (.vtt) file from Export ▸ All export options ▸ Video file, and style it in whatever tool you're compositing in.
  • If a lower-third or title looks wrong after export — for example it loses its background band and comes in as plain, small text — that's usually because a given NLE's native caption/title track can't carry every visual property (a background band, in particular, often doesn't survive into a Premiere caption track). Check the export's notes for what that specific format does and doesn't carry, and restyle the track in your NLE if needed.

We don't currently offer a dedicated transparent/alpha-channel export of overlays alone — if that's a hard requirement for your pipeline, let support know what you're trying to do.
