Can Eddie read a document you upload or paste in chat?
Eddie can't open files dropped or attached directly in a chat conversation — reference material has to go into the Backgrounder first.
If you drag a brief, script, or blueprint document into the chat window with Eddie — on the web, in Claude, or in ChatGPT — Eddie has no tool to open or read that attachment. It only sees the media sources and edits that are actually part of your Eddie project, plus anything you've attached from the Backgrounder. Dropping a file into the conversation window doesn't put it in front of Eddie.
What to do instead
If you want Eddie to follow a brief, script, treatment, or a dictionary of names and spellings, add it to the Backgrounder — a workspace library built for exactly this — and then attach the relevant folder to your project:
- Open app.heyeddie.ai/backgrounder.
- Add the material as a Link, Treatment/Brief, Script, Dictionary, or Face entry, organized into folders.
- Inside your project, open the Backgrounder section and tick the folders this project should use.
- Point Eddie at it in your prompt: "Cut to the brief," "Follow the teleprompter script," "Use the spellings from the dictionary."
Attaching a Backgrounder before you import footage also feeds Eddie's transcription engine a keyterm dictionary, so names and product terms get recognized correctly from the first pass — see Backgrounder: give Eddie context.
If you don't have time to set up a Backgrounder folder
You can paste the key points directly into the chat as plain text — Eddie reads what you type in the conversation, just not attached files. For anything you'll want to reuse across projects or reference repeatedly, the Backgrounder is the reliable path.
