Use your own voice recording as a voice-over
Record your voice on a phone or a mic, add the audio file to your project with + Add, and ask Eddie to place it. Eddie cannot open a link or a code from a recording app.
Last updated October 20, 2026You can use a recording of your own voice in an edit: a new intro, a narration, or a line you want to say again. Eddie needs the audio file itself, added to the project.
1. Record it
Any recorder works: the voice memo app on your phone, a mic on your computer, or a field recorder. Record in a quiet room and leave a second of silence before and after you speak.
Eddie imports WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC and other audio files. A phone voice memo is usually an M4A file. See Supported file formats.
2. Get the file, not a link
Eddie cannot open a link or a code from a recording app, and it cannot listen to a message in the chat. Pasting a share link or a code into the prompt box adds nothing to your project.
Save the recording as a file. Then get it onto the computer you use Eddie on, or into Google Drive or Dropbox. For example, email it to yourself, or use your phone's Share or Save to Files option.
3. Add it to the project
In the project sidebar, click + Add next to Media. Drop the file in, or pick it from Google Drive or Dropbox, then press Import. See Add media to an existing project.
Eddie transcribes the recording in a few minutes. When it is ready, it is listed under Media with the rest of your files.
4. Ask Eddie to place it
Tell Eddie what the recording is for, for example:
- "Use my new recording as the intro, in place of the old intro at 2:54."
- "Lay my narration under the whole edit and put shots from the interview over it."
Eddie reads your recording's transcript, so it knows the exact words and their timing. A recording has no picture, so ask for shots to go over it, or Eddie suggests some. See Add b-roll.
Good to know
- Eddie works from the transcript. It does not listen to the sound itself, so play the edit to check how your recording sounds.
- If you want a generated voice instead of your own, see Music, voice-over and audio.
- A project made only from audio is an audio project. See Edit a podcast or other audio-only recording.
