When the desktop app skips transcoding
The desktop app uploads a file as it is, with no transcoding, when the file is already a light, playable proxy. There is no setting to turn on.
When you import into the Eddie desktop app, it makes a light copy of each video for playback and analysis, and uploads that copy. Your original files stay on your drive, and exports to your editor link back to them.
When it skips that step
There is no setting for this. The app checks each file and uploads it as it is, with no transcoding, when the file is already a good playback copy:
- it plays in a web browser (for example H.264 or HEVC in an .mp4 or .mov);
- it is 1080p or smaller (1920x1080, or 1080x1920 for vertical);
- it is under 5 GB;
- it has one audio track, mono or stereo;
- it has a keyframe at least every 2 seconds, so scrubbing stays smooth.
Camera RAW (R3D, BRAW), DNxHD/DNxHR and CineForm are always transcoded. So is any file that misses one of the points above.
To import faster
If you already have proxies that meet those points, import the proxies. The app uploads them without transcoding, and you can relink to your originals in your editor when you finish. See RAW footage and codecs.
