Supported file formats, import limits and frame rate

Which video, audio and photo files Eddie imports (MXF, XAVC, HEVC, ProRes and more), how much one import and one project hold, and the frame rate your edit exports at.

Eddie imports most video, audio and photo files. On the web, a file that can't be imported is listed with the reason, never dropped without a word.

Video

  • Common files: MOV, MP4, M4V, MKV, AVI, WebM, MPEG, WMV, 3GP and FLV, with codecs such as H.264, HEVC (H.265), ProRes and DNxHD.
  • Camera cards: MXF (Canon XF-AVC, Sony XAVC), AVCHD (.mts, .m2ts) and DV.
  • Action cameras: Insta360 (.insv) and GoPro low-res proxies (.lrv).
  • Camera RAW: Blackmagic BRAW, RED R3D and Canon Cinema RAW Light can't be read in the browser. The web import lists them with that reason. Use the desktop app, or make proxies first. See RAW footage and codecs.

Audio and photos

  • Audio: WAV, BWF, AIFF, MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA and CAF. Audio on its own becomes a normal project. See Import your footage.
  • Photos: JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC.

Not accepted

  • ZIP and other archives. Unzip them first, then add the media files inside.
  • A Final Cut XML or other timeline file describes an edit, not media. To bring a timeline in, see Import from Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve.

How much you can import

  • On the web: up to 1,000 files in one import. Keep the tab open until the upload itself finishes; processing then carries on without you.
  • In the desktop app: up to 20 hours of footage in one import, and up to 4 hours for one file.
  • One project holds up to 100 hours of video in total. Add more later with Add media to an existing project.

Importing costs credits per hour of footage. The cost meter shows the price before you start. See How credits and billing work.

Frame rate

Eddie keeps your footage's frame rate. An edit renders to MP4 and exports to your editing app at the frame rate of its first video clip: footage shot at 23.976 exports at 23.976, and 59.94 at 59.94. An edit made only of photos or audio uses 24 fps.

  • Eddie read a clip's rate wrongly? Ask Eddie to correct it. See Change clip metadata.
  • Slow motion from high-frame-rate footage: ask for a speed ramp. Changing the frame rate does not change the speed of a clip.
