How to import an SRT file in DaVinci Resolve

Updated 5 stepsFor DaVinci Resolve

The short answer

Choose File > Import > Subtitle, pick the .srt file, then drag it from the Media Pool onto the timeline. Resolve creates a subtitle track and places each caption at its timecode.

In DaVinci Resolve

  1. 01Import the file
  2. 02Place it on the timeline
  3. 03Line it up
  4. 04Fix an offset
  5. 05Style it
  1. 01

    Import the file

On the Edit page, choose File > Import > Subtitle and select the .srt file. You can also drag it into the Media Pool.

  2. 02

    Place it on the timeline

Drag the subtitle file from the Media Pool onto the timeline. Resolve adds a subtitle track for it.

  3. 03

    Line it up

Drop it at the start of the timeline. The SRT times count from zero, so captions match an edit that starts at its first frame.

  4. 04

    Fix an offset

If every caption is early or late by the same amount, select all the subtitle clips on the track and drag them together until the first line matches the speech.

  5. 05

    Style it

Select a caption and set the font, size and position in the Inspector's Track tab.

Good to know

Before you start

Note 1
If captions land far from the speech, the timeline may not start at 00:00:00:00 or the SRT may come from a different cut.

Do it in Eddie

Eddie gives you SRT and VTT files for free.

Download Captions (.srt) or Captions (.vtt) from Export > All export options > Video file, and import the SRT into Resolve with File > Import > Subtitle. The Resolve project (.drp) already puts Eddie's captions on a subtitle track, so you only need the SRT for another route or for an upload.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

Why are my imported subtitles out of sync?
The timeline starts at a timecode other than zero, such as 01:00:00:00, or the SRT is from another cut. Move all the captions together to line them up.
Can DaVinci Resolve import VTT files?
Resolve imports SRT reliably. If a VTT file won't import, convert it to SRT first.
