Updated 5 stepsFor DaVinci Resolve

The short answer

Voice Isolation is in DaVinci Resolve Studio. Select the dialogue clip, open the Inspector's Audio tab, turn on Voice Isolation and set the amount. On the Fairlight page it is also a track control in the Mixer.

  1. 01

    Select the clip

On the Edit page, select one or more dialogue clips in the timeline.

  2. 02

    Turn it on

Open the Inspector, go to the Audio tab and switch on Voice Isolation.

  3. 03

    Set the amount

Start around 50. Raise it for loud noise and lower it if the voice sounds hollow or cut off at the end of words.

  4. 04

Or apply it to a track

On the Fairlight page, use the Voice Isolation control on the dialogue track in the Mixer to process every clip on that track.

  5. 05

    Check playback

Voice Isolation uses the Neural Engine and can slow playback. If playback stutters, lower the timeline playback quality or render the clip in place.

Note 1
Voice Isolation needs DaVinci Resolve Studio. In the free version the control is missing or locked.

Do it in Eddie

Eddie's audio cleanup does a similar job, in Eddie only.

Ask Eddie to clean up the sound of a clip. It removes noise and music playing under someone talking, at 18 credits per minute of source. The result plays in Eddie and in MP4 renders, but Resolve exports carry your original recordings, so use Voice Isolation in Resolve if you finish there.

To even out levels between speakers in the export, tick Auto-level speech (-16 LUFS) on the Resolve destination; it arrives as clip gain.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

Why can't I find Voice Isolation in DaVinci Resolve?
You are using the free version. Voice Isolation is in DaVinci Resolve Studio only.
Does Voice Isolation remove echo?
It can reduce some room sound, but it is not a full de-reverb. Studio's De-Reverb or Dialogue Separator effects are better for echo.
