In DaVinci Resolve

  1. 01Select the clips
  2. 02Open Normalize Audio Levels
  3. 03Pick a mode
  4. 04Set the target
  5. 05Check the mix
  1. 01

    Select the clips

On the Edit or Fairlight page, select the clips to level. Cmd+A on Mac or Ctrl+A on Windows selects everything in the timeline.

  2. 02

    Open Normalize Audio Levels

Right-click one of the selected clips and choose Normalize Audio Levels.

  3. 03

    Pick a mode

Choose Sample Peak Program or True Peak Program to set peaks, or ITU-R BS.1770-4 or EBU R128 to set loudness.

  4. 04

    Set the target

Type the target level. Under Set Level, choose Independent to level each clip on its own, or Relative to move them all by the same amount.

  5. 05

    Check the mix

Normalizing sets clip gain only. Watch the loudness meter on the Fairlight page and mix the whole programme to about -14 LUFS for YouTube or -23 LUFS for EBU broadcast.

Note 1
Normalizing every clip to the same loudness does not make the final mix hit a target. Measure the whole timeline on the Fairlight page.

Do it in Eddie

Eddie can level speech in the export, and sets final loudness on MP4 renders.

Tick Auto-level speech (-16 LUFS) on the Resolve destination before you export, and each speaker's dialogue arrives at the same level as clip gain or volume. For cloud MP4 renders, Eddie sets final loudness to -14 LUFS by default, with EBU -23 and ATSC -24 options. Final loudness does not change a timeline export, so set the mix target in Resolve.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

What LUFS should I use for YouTube in DaVinci Resolve?
Mix to about -14 LUFS integrated with true peaks below -1 dBTP. YouTube turns louder uploads down.
Can I normalize a whole timeline at once?
Select every clip and normalize them together. For the mix itself, adjust the main bus on the Fairlight page while you watch the loudness meter.
