How to fix audio in one ear in DaVinci Resolve

Updated 5 stepsFor DaVinci Resolve

The short answer

Right-click the clip and choose Clip Attributes, open the Audio tab, and set both the left and right source channels to the channel that has the voice, such as Embedded Channel 1. Or set the format to Mono and put the clip on a mono track.

In DaVinci Resolve

  2. 02Open Clip Attributes
  3. 03Map both sides

  1. 01

    Find the live channel

Make the audio track taller and look at the waveform. A camera or lav recording often has the voice on channel 1 and silence or a second mic on channel 2.

  2. 02

    Open Clip Attributes

Select the clips in the Media Pool, or on the timeline, right-click and choose Clip Attributes, then open the Audio tab.

  3. 03

    Map both sides

Keep the format as Stereo and set the source channel for both the left and right channels to Embedded Channel 1 (or whichever channel has the voice). Click OK.

  4. 04

    Or make it mono

Set the format to Mono with the voice channel as its source. On a mono track Resolve plays it in both ears.

  5. 05

    Check the pan

If it still plays on one side, open the Mixer and center the track's pan control.

Good to know

Before you start

Note 1
Change Clip Attributes in the Media Pool before you edit, so every use of the clip is fixed. Clips already in the timeline may need the change too.
Note 2
If both channels hold different mics, keep them on separate tracks rather than doubling one.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Remapping audio channels isn't a documented Eddie tool. Fix it in Resolve's Clip Attributes.

Eddie can still clean up the voice and level each speaker. Tick Auto-level speech (-16 LUFS) on the Resolve destination and dialogue arrives at an even level as clip gain. Cleaned audio stays in Eddie and its MP4 renders, so map the channels in Resolve after the hand-off.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

Why is my DaVinci Resolve audio only in one ear?
The mic was recorded to one channel of a stereo file. Map that channel to both sides in Clip Attributes > Audio.
Will the export still play in one ear?
Yes, until you fix the clip. Resolve renders what it plays, so change Clip Attributes before you export.
