How to do picture-in-picture in DaVinci Resolve

Updated 5 stepsFor DaVinci Resolve

The short answer

Put the main video on Video 1 and the inset clip on Video 2 above it. Select the inset, lower Zoom in the Inspector to about 0.35, and move it into a corner with Position.

  1. 01

    Stack the clips

On the Edit page, put the main video on Video 1 and drag the inset clip onto Video 2 directly above it.

  2. 02

    Scale it down

Select the inset clip, open the Inspector and lower Zoom under Transform to about 0.3 to 0.4.

  3. 03

    Move it into a corner

Change Position X and Y, or choose Transform from the viewer's menu and drag the inset on the picture.

  4. 04

    Add a border or shape

Use Cropping to trim the inset's edges. For a shadow, add a ResolveFX effect such as Drop Shadow from Effects > OpenFX (some ResolveFX are Studio-only).

  5. 05

    Animate it in

Keyframe Zoom or Position, or drag the clip's fade handle for a simple fade in.

Do it in Eddie

Picture-in-picture layouts aren't a documented Eddie feature; build them in Resolve.

Eddie places b-roll over the speaker as full-frame overlays on upper tracks, and those overlays arrive in Resolve as clips on upper tracks. In Resolve, scale an overlay down with Zoom to turn it into an inset.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

Why can't I see the clip on the lower track?
The top clip still fills the frame. Lower its Zoom, or check that its Opacity in the Inspector is above 0.
Can I use a preset layout for picture-in-picture?
Resolve has Video Collage in the Effects Library for split-screen grids. For one inset, Zoom and Position are quicker.
