Updated 5 stepsFor DaVinci Resolve

The short answer

Select a cut point on the Edit page and press Cmd+T on Mac or Ctrl+T on Windows to add the standard transition, a one-second Cross Dissolve. For any other transition, drag it from Effects > Toolbox > Video Transitions onto the cut.

Note 1
A transition needs extra frames (handles) beyond each clip's out and in points. If a clip has none, Resolve shortens the transition or offers to trim the clips.

Do it in Eddie

Ask Eddie for transitions; fades and dissolves carry into Resolve.

Say "Dissolve between the second and third clips" or "Whip pan into the second clip." Fades and dissolves (0.2 to 3 seconds) arrive in Resolve as real cross-dissolves. Whip, flash and glitch transitions show in Eddie and MP4 renders only; in the Resolve export they become plain cuts.

Back to Resolve

Open the edit, click Export and choose Resolve. The default is a Resolve project (.drp) that opens with the timeline built; behind the arrow is a Resolve FCPXML you bring into the project you have open with File > Import > Timeline. In the desktop app, Send to DaVinci Resolve builds the timeline in the Resolve you have running, through Eddie's script (Workspace > Scripts > Eddie AI AE).

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media: relink to those in the Media Pool with Relink Selected Clips, not to the camera originals.

FAQ

Questions

Why can't I add a transition to a clip?
The clips have no handles: there are no extra frames past the cut. Trim each clip back a few frames, then add the transition.
How do I add a transition to every cut at once?
Select all the clips with Cmd+A or Ctrl+A, then press Cmd+T or Ctrl+T. Resolve adds the standard transition to every edit in the selection.
