How to fix a proxy audio channel mismatch in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Premiere shows "Proxy Media and Full Resolution Media must have matching audio channels" when a proxy and its original don't carry the same audio channels, and it won't link them. Select each file in the Project panel and read the Audio line in the Info panel, which gives sample rate, bit depth and channels. If the clip relies on Clip > Modify > Audio Channels, Adobe says don't use proxies, so edit it at full resolution. Otherwise make the proxy in Adobe Media Encoder with the checkbox next to Channels turned on, in a QuickTime format if the source has more than 5.1 channels, and attach it with Proxy > Attach Proxies.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

Note where the message came up

Adobe doesn't document when this message appears. Editors report it when attaching proxies made by a camera or other software (Proxy > Attach Proxies), when reconnecting originals (Proxy > Reconnect Full Resolution Media), and after making proxies with Proxy > Create Proxies and a custom ingest preset. Note which clips it names.

  2. 02

Compare the channel counts in the Info panel

Open the Info panel. Select the original clip in the Project panel and read the Audio line, which shows sample rate, bit depth and channels, in that order. Import the proxy file, select it and read the same line. If the channel counts differ, that is the mismatch.

  3. 03

Check Modify Audio Channels on the clip

Select the original clip and choose Clip > Modify > Audio Channels. The matrix shows clip channels on the left and source channels at the top. Adobe lists the option to modify audio channels as unsupported in proxy workflows, and says that if your workflow relies on it, don't use proxies in Premiere, because doing so results in unexpected behavior. In that case keep the clip at full resolution, and if a proxy is attached, choose Proxy > Detach Proxy.

  4. 04

Make a proxy that matches the source channels

In Adobe Media Encoder, add the original files to the queue and click the text under Format or Preset to open Export Settings. On the Audio tab, under Basic Audio Settings, turn on the checkbox next to Channels, or click Match Source. Pick a QuickTime format if the source has more than 5.1 channels: Adobe says a format that can't carry the source layout falls back to the closest option it supports, and H.264 supports only mono, stereo or 5.1.

  5. 05

    Attach the new proxy

Back in Premiere, select the full-resolution clips, right-click and choose Proxy > Attach Proxies. Pick the file properties to match (file name, file extension, tape name, timecode), turn on Relink others automatically, click Attach and choose the proxy file. Check its Audio line in the Info panel first if Premiere refuses it again.

  6. 06

If it still won't attach, edit without a proxy

Leave that clip on its full-resolution media and keep proxies for the rest. Proxy > Detach Proxy removes any link and leaves the proxy file on disk.

  • Adobe's Ingest and proxy workflow page lists what proxy workflows don't support, word for word: "The proxy functionality in Premiere is not compatible with the proxy functionality in After Effects. Dynamic Link is not supported for After Effects compositions or projects. Editing audio in Adobe Audition is also not supported for proxy workflows. The option to modify audio channels and interpret footage isn't supported."
  • Attach Proxies and Reconnect Full Resolution Media work only on video-only, audio/video and offline clips. Audio-only clips, stills and image sequences aren't supported.
  • Premiere makes proxies only for online video clips without captions, and not for growing files.
  • Matching channels in Media Encoder is a recent feature: Adobe's page for it is dated September 2026. Adobe describes it as part of the latest Media Encoder, so update it if you don't see the checkbox next to Channels. The Adobe pages behind each step are linked at the end of this page.

Do it in Eddie

Eddie can't fix this error inside Premiere, but it doesn't need your Premiere proxies.

When Eddie reads clips from Premiere, it makes its own proxies to keep the analysis quick, including on pro codecs such as R3D and BRAW. If you imported through the desktop app, the Premiere export still points back at your original camera files.

On a multi-channel recording, you can choose which channels play in Eddie, for example only the second channel of a three-channel recorder. That choice plays in Eddie's web player only. The video render and editor exports, Premiere included, still play every channel for now.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.

Questions

Can I change audio channels on a clip that already has proxies?
Adobe says no: the option to modify audio channels isn't supported in proxy workflows, and if your workflow relies on Modify Audio Channels, don't use proxies in Premiere. Decide the channel mapping a clip needs first, and edit clips that need it at full resolution.
Why won't Premiere attach the proxies my camera made?
If Premiere shows this error, the camera's proxy files carry different audio channels from the originals. Compare them in the Info panel. You can make new proxies in Media Encoder with Channels matched to the source, or edit those clips without proxies.
Can I save the channel setting as a preset?
Yes. In Media Encoder's Preset Browser, choose Create Encoding Preset, and on the Audio tab turn on the checkboxes next to Sample Rate and Channels. Every export with that preset then uses the source's sample rate and channel layout.
Does detaching a proxy delete the file?
No. Proxy > Detach Proxy removes the link but leaves the proxy file on disk, in case another project uses it. Delete it yourself when you're done.
Can I attach a proxy to an audio-only clip?
No. Attach Proxies and Reconnect Full Resolution Media work on video-only, audio/video and offline clips. Audio-only clips, stills and image sequences aren't supported.
