How to make proxies in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Select the clips in the Project panel, right-click and choose Proxy > Create Proxies. Pick a format and preset, and Media Encoder makes them. Use the Toggle Proxies button in the Program Monitor to switch.
In Premiere Pro
01
Select the clips
In the Project panel, select the clips or bins you want proxies for.
02
Choose Proxy > Create Proxies
Right-click and choose Proxy > Create Proxies.
03
Pick the format
Choose a format such as QuickTime with an Apple ProRes Proxy or a low-resolution H.264 preset, and choose where the files go. Click OK.
04
Wait for Media Encoder
Adobe Media Encoder opens and makes the proxies. Premiere attaches them as they finish.
05
Toggle proxies
Add the Toggle Proxies button to the Program Monitor with the button editor (+), and click it to switch between proxies and the full-resolution files. Exports use the full-resolution files.
- To make proxies on import every time, open the Media Browser, turn on Ingest, and set ingest settings to Create Proxies.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie makes its own proxies, so you don't need to before importing.
When Eddie reads clips from Premiere, it makes proxies to keep the analysis quick, including on pro codecs such as R3D and BRAW. If you imported through the desktop app, the Premiere export still points back at your original camera files.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.

Questions
- Do proxies affect the export?
- No. Premiere exports from the full-resolution media unless you choose to use proxies in the export settings.
- Why are my proxies the wrong aspect ratio?
- The preset doesn't match the source. Pick a proxy preset with the same aspect ratio as the footage.
