How to add lower thirds in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Open the Essential Graphics panel, browse the templates for a lower third, and drag one onto the track above the speaker. Edit the name and title in the Properties or Essential Graphics panel.
In Premiere Pro
01
Open the templates
Choose Window > Essential Graphics and open Browse (or the Graphics templates panel in newer versions). Search for lower third.
02
Place one
Drag the template onto the track above the speaker, starting a beat after they appear.
03
Edit the text
Select it and type the name and role in the template's text fields.
04
Reuse it
Option-drag or Alt-drag the clip to copy it to the next speaker and change the text.
05
Time it
Keep it on screen for about 4 to 6 seconds, long enough to read twice.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Ask for lower thirds, and Eddie places them where each person first speaks.
Say "Lower-third with her name and role the first time she speaks." Eddie's lower-third templates carry into the Premiere export as overlay clips you can restyle.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
