How to add captions in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Open Window > Text, transcribe the sequence in the Transcript tab, then click Create captions. Premiere puts a caption track on the timeline that you can style and correct.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Open the Text panel

Choose Window > Text. It has Transcript and Captions tabs.

  2. 02

    Transcribe

In the Transcript tab, click Transcribe sequence, choose the language, and tick speaker recognition if there is more than one speaker.

  3. 03

    Fix the transcript

Read the transcript and correct names and terms. Captions inherit its mistakes.

  4. 04

    Create captions

Click Create captions (in the Captions tab or the Transcript tab's menu). Set the maximum characters per line, the minimum duration, and one or two lines, then click Create.

  5. 05

    Review on the timeline

Premiere adds a caption track above the video. Double-click a caption in the Captions tab to edit its text, and drag caption edges in the Timeline to fix timing.

  • Automatic transcription and captions arrived in Premiere Pro 2021 (version 15.4). Older versions need a caption file made elsewhere.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Ask Eddie to add captions, and they carry into the Premiere project.

Say "Add captions." You can ask for a style, such as highlighting each word as it's spoken, your brand font, or a color per speaker. Captions move off faces automatically and skip filler words such as um by default.

The Premiere project (.prproj) carries a caption track in your font, size, position and colors, and the download includes an SRT file too. Premiere XML carries no captions, so use the free SRT or VTT download with it. No editing app gets the word-by-word highlight, the background band or the entrance animation; those are in Eddie's MP4 renders.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
