How to make a vertical video in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select the sequence in the Project panel, choose Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence, pick 9:16 and click Create. Premiere makes a vertical copy and keeps the subject in frame. Check each shot and fix any it got wrong.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Auto Reframe

Select the finished sequence in the Project panel and choose Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence.

  2. 02

    Pick the shape

Choose Vertical 9:16 (or Square 1:1 or 4:5), set Motion Tracking to Default, and tick Nest clips if you want to keep the original edit grouped.

  3. 03

    Check the framing

Play the new sequence. For a shot that lost the subject, select it and adjust Position in Effect Controls, or Auto Reframe's own position keyframes.

  4. 04

    Or build it by hand

Make a new sequence of 1080 x 1920, paste the clips in, right-click each and choose Set to Frame Size, then reposition.

  5. 05

    Move the captions and titles

Captions and graphics don't move with Auto Reframe. Reposition them clear of the platform's buttons.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Ask Eddie for a vertical version, and it reframes each shot around the subject.

Say "Make this vertical for TikTok" or "Square version for the feed." Eddie makes 9:16 (1080 x 1920), 1:1 and 4:5, and crops per shot to keep the subject in frame. To cut several vertical clips from one long video, ask, for example, "Cut five short vertical clips from the strongest moments, under 45 seconds." Reframing is free inside a prompt run, and the crops carry into Premiere.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
