How to resize a video to fit the frame in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select the clips in the Timeline, right-click and choose Set to Frame Size. Premiere scales each clip to fit the sequence while keeping full resolution.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Select the clips

Select the clips that are too big or too small in the Timeline.

  2. 02

    Set to Frame Size

Right-click and choose Set to Frame Size. Premiere sets each clip's Scale so it fits the sequence frame.

  3. 03

    Fill instead of fit

If the clip has a different shape, raise Scale in Effect Controls to fill the frame, then adjust Position.

  4. 04

    Set a default

In Settings > Media, set Default Media Scaling to Set to Frame Size so new clips fit automatically.

  • Avoid Scale to Frame Size on 4K footage in an HD sequence if you plan to punch in: it resamples the clip down, and scaling back up looks soft.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Eddie fits every clip to the edit's format.

Mixed sources, such as phone and camera footage, are framed per shot when you reframe. Crop framing carries into the Premiere export.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.

Questions

What is the difference between Set to Frame Size and Scale to Frame Size?
Set to Frame Size changes the Scale value and keeps the full resolution. Scale to Frame Size resamples the clip to the frame size.
Why is my clip small in the middle of the frame?
The sequence is larger than the clip. Use Set to Frame Size, or match the sequence to the footage.
