How to add transitions in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select a cut point in the Timeline and press Cmd+D on Mac or Ctrl+D on Windows to add the default Cross Dissolve. Or drag any transition from Effects > Video Transitions onto the cut.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Select the cut

Click the edit point between two clips.

  2. 02

    Add the default

Press Cmd+D or Ctrl+D. Premiere adds the default video transition, Cross Dissolve.

  3. 03

    Or pick another

Open Effects > Video Transitions and drag one, such as Dip to Black or Film Dissolve, onto the cut.

  4. 04

    Change the length

Drag the transition's edge in the Timeline, or double-click it and type a duration.

  5. 05

    Set a new default

Right-click a transition in the Effects panel and choose Set Selected as Default Transition.

  • Each clip needs extra frames past the cut (handles). Without them, Premiere repeats frames, shown by diagonal lines on the transition.

Do it in Eddie

Ask Eddie for transitions; fades and dissolves carry into Premiere.

Say "Dissolve between the second and third clips" or "Whip pan into the second clip." Fades and dissolves (0.2 to 3 seconds) arrive in Premiere as real cross-dissolves. Whip, flash and glitch transitions show in Eddie and MP4 renders only; in the Premiere export they become plain cuts.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
