How to import an EDL into Premiere Pro
Short answer
Choose File > Import, select the .edl, and choose the sequence settings Premiere asks for. Premiere creates a sequence of offline clips that you relink to the source media.
In Premiere Pro
01
Choose File > Import
Choose File > Import and select the .edl file.
02
Set the sequence
Premiere asks for the EDL's frame rate and a sequence preset. Match what the EDL was made with; a wrong rate shifts every edit.
03
Find the new bin
Premiere creates a bin with a sequence and one offline clip per source reel.
04
Relink by reel and timecode
Select the offline clips, right-click and choose Link Media. Point Premiere at the source files. Reel names and timecode in the files must match the EDL for the edits to line up.
- An EDL carries one video track, cuts, simple dissolves and timecode. It does not carry effects, titles or more than a few audio tracks.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie does not read EDLs. To start a cut in Eddie, import the footage itself.
Import the clips from your Premiere bin through the Eddie desktop app, then ask for the edit you want, for example the selects from each interview in order. The finished edit comes back to Premiere as a project file, so there's no EDL in between.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
