How to remove a green screen in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Apply Effects > Video Effects > Keying > Ultra Key to the clip, click the Key Color eyedropper on the green, then refine the matte with Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup. Put the background on the track below.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Place the clips

Put the background on V1 and the green screen shot on V2 above it.

  2. 02

    Apply Ultra Key

In the Effects panel, search for Ultra Key and drag it onto the green screen clip.

  3. 03

    Pick the color

In Effect Controls, click the Key Color eyedropper and click the green near the subject.

  4. 04

    Check the matte

Set Output to Alpha Channel to see the matte in black and white. The subject should be solid white and the background solid black.

  5. 05

    Refine it

Adjust Matte Generation (Pedestal, Tolerance) and Matte Cleanup (Choke, Soften), then Spill Suppression to remove green on the edges. Set Output back to Composite.

  • Even light on the screen and space between subject and screen make the key easier.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Eddie can place graphics behind a subject, but green screen keying isn't a documented Eddie feature.

Prompt-authored motion graphics in Eddie can sit behind the subject in MP4 renders. They don't carry into Premiere exports yet. For a green screen key you'll finish in Premiere, use Ultra Key there.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
