Premiere Pro · Cutting and the timeline
How to cut a clip in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Move the playhead to the frame, then press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) to add an edit on the targeted tracks. Or press C for the Razor tool and click the clip where you want to cut.
In Premiere Pro
01
Place the playhead
Park the playhead on the frame where the cut should go. Use the Left and Right arrow keys to step one frame at a time.
02
Target the tracks
Turn on the track targeting buttons (V1, A1 and so on) at the left of the Timeline for the tracks you want to cut.
03
Add the edit
Press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows (Sequence > Add Edit). Press Cmd+Shift+K or Ctrl+Shift+K to cut every track, whether targeted or not.
04
Or use the Razor tool
Press C, then click the clip where you want to split it. Shift-click to cut every track at that point. Press V to go back to the Selection tool.
05
Remove the unwanted piece
Select the piece you don't want and press Shift+Delete for a ripple delete, which closes the gap it leaves.
- Jump cuts are the same technique: cut out the pauses and stumbles between sentences and ripple delete them.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
In Eddie you describe the cut and it makes the edits.
Ask for the result, such as "Cut the stumbles and keep the answer about pricing." Eddie cuts on the transcript, which has every word time-stamped. To cut by hand, right-click a clip on Eddie's timeline and choose Split Clip, or delete words in the transcript.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
