How to unlink audio and video in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Select the clip in the Timeline, right-click and choose Unlink. The audio and video can then be moved, trimmed or deleted separately. Select both and choose Link to join them again.
In Premiere Pro
01
Select the clip
Click the clip in the Timeline.
02
Unlink
Right-click and choose Unlink, or press Cmd+L on Mac or Ctrl+L on Windows.
03
Work on one part
Click just the audio or just the video, then move, trim or delete it.
04
Relink
Select both parts, right-click and choose Link. If they slipped, Premiere shows red out-of-sync numbers on the clips.
- For one quick change, hold Option on Mac or Alt on Windows while clicking to select only the audio or video without unlinking.
- The Linked Selection button at the top left of the Timeline turns linking off for every clip.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie handles audio and picture separately for you.
B-roll goes on as picture only, with the speaker's audio running underneath. To take a shot's sound from another file, ask, for example, "Use the lav audio under this shot." Per-clip levels carry to Premiere as each clip's Volume Level.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
