Premiere Pro · Cutting and the timeline
How to remove silence in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Transcribe the sequence, then open the Transcript tab in the Text panel and use its pause options to highlight pauses longer than a length you choose. Delete them, and Premiere cuts the matching gaps from the sequence.
In Premiere Pro
01
Transcribe the sequence
Choose Window > Text, open the Transcript tab and click Transcribe sequence if Premiere hasn't already.
02
Find the pauses
Pauses show in the transcript as [...]. Open the filter options in the Transcript tab and choose Pauses to highlight them all.
03
Set the length
Choose how long a pause must be before it counts, so short natural breaths are left alone.
04
Delete them
Delete the highlighted pauses all at once, or one at a time if you want to keep some. Premiere ripple deletes the matching sections of the timeline.
05
Play it back
Watch the result. Removing every pause can make speech sound rushed; restore a pause with undo or by extending the clips.
- Text-based editing needs Premiere Pro 2023 (version 23.x) or later. Pause handling has changed between releases, so the menu names may differ in your version.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie removes silences when you ask, and lets you say which pauses to keep.
Ask "Cut the long pauses" or "Leave a beat after the punchline." Eddie finds pauses from the transcript's timing, so it never mistakes quiet speech for a gap. Pauses show on the timeline as teal pause segments, and you can ask Eddie to bring one back.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.

Questions
- Does Premiere Pro have automatic silence removal?
- Yes, through text-based editing: it can find and delete pauses in the transcript. Older versions need a third-party plug-in.
- Will removing silence break my b-roll?
- Deletes ripple the whole sequence, so b-roll on upper tracks can move out of place. Remove silences before you lay b-roll.
