How to replace a clip in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Hold Option on Mac or Alt on Windows and drag the new clip from the Project panel onto the clip in the Timeline. Premiere swaps it in at the same length and keeps the effects.
In Premiere Pro
01
Pick the new clip
Find the replacement in the Project panel, or load it in the Source Monitor and mark an in point.
02
Option-drag or Alt-drag
Hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and drag it onto the clip in the Timeline. The clip is replaced, keeping its length and effects.
03
Or use the menu
Select the timeline clip, load the new one in the Source Monitor, then right-click the timeline clip and choose Replace With Clip > From Source Monitor.
04
Replace everywhere
To swap the file for every use in the project, right-click the clip in the Project panel and choose Replace Footage.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Ask Eddie to swap a shot, and it finds the replacement.
Say "Replace this b-roll with something from the factory tour" or hover a clip and use Cover with b-roll to pick from playable options. Eddie uses your own footage first, then stock, then generated clips.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
