How to crop a video in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Drag Effects > Video Effects > Transform > Crop onto the clip, then set Left, Top, Right and Bottom in Effect Controls. Raise Scale under Motion if you want the cropped picture to fill the frame.
In Premiere Pro
01
Apply Crop
In the Effects panel, search for Crop and drag it onto the clip.
02
Set the edges
In Effect Controls, set Left, Top, Right and Bottom as percentages, or select the Crop effect and drag its handles in the Program Monitor.
03
Soften the edge
Raise Edge Feather for a soft border.
04
Fill the frame
To remove the black areas, raise Motion > Scale and adjust Position. Scaling past about 120% on HD footage softens the picture.
- To change the frame's shape, such as making it square, change the sequence size instead of cropping.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie crops each shot to keep the subject in frame, and the crop carries into Premiere.
Ask "Crop in tighter on the speaker" or reframe for another format. Eddie crops clip by clip rather than applying one static crop, and you can drag or nudge a crop frame by hand on the timeline. Crop framing carries into the Premiere export, and crops are free inside a prompt run.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
