How to make a freeze frame in Premiere Pro
Short answer
Park the playhead on the frame, right-click the clip and choose Insert Frame Hold Segment. Premiere adds a two-second still at that point, which you can trim to any length.
In Premiere Pro
01
Find the frame
Park the playhead on the frame you want to freeze, with the clip selected.
02
Insert a hold
Right-click the clip and choose Insert Frame Hold Segment. Premiere splits the clip and adds a two-second still.
03
Or hold to the end
Choose Add Frame Hold instead to freeze from the playhead to the end of the clip.
04
Set the length
Drag the end of the frame hold segment to make it longer or shorter.
- To use the still elsewhere, click Export Frame (the camera icon) in the Program Monitor and tick Import into project.
Eddie AI
Do it in Eddie
Eddie makes still-frame pauses in one case: audio description.
Ask Eddie to "Make an audio-described version of this edit." It writes the descriptions, voices them and adds still-frame pauses where the picture needs explaining. In Premiere, each pause arrives as a still image. For a stylistic freeze frame, add it in Premiere.
Back to Premiere
Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.
If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
