How to use Enhance Speech in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select the dialogue clip, open Essential Sound, tag it as Dialogue and click Enhance. Premiere processes the clip; set the Mix Amount to blend the enhanced voice with the original.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Select the clip

Select one or more dialogue clips in the Timeline.

  2. 02

    Tag as Dialogue

In Window > Essential Sound, click Dialogue. Premiere 24.5 and later also shows a speech badge on clips it detects as dialogue.

  3. 03

    Click Enhance

Next to Enhance Speech, click Enhance. Premiere analyzes the clip in the background.

  4. 04

    Set the Mix Amount

Lower the Mix Amount if the voice sounds over-processed. Many editors keep it between 40% and 70%.

  5. 05

    Check the start and end

Listen to the first and last words. Enhance Speech can clip breaths and soft endings.

  • Enhance Speech needs Premiere Pro 24.5 or later. It works best on speech in English and other major languages.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Eddie's audio cleanup does a similar job, in Eddie only.

Ask Eddie to clean up the sound of a clip. The result plays in Eddie and in MP4 renders, but a Premiere export carries your original recordings, so use Enhance Speech in Premiere if you finish there. To even out levels across speakers in the export, tick Auto-level speech (-16 LUFS) on the Premiere destination; it arrives as clip gain.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
