How to reduce background noise in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select the clip, open the Essential Sound panel, tag it as Dialogue, and turn on Reduce Noise under Repair. For more control, apply Effects > Audio Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > DeNoise and lower its amount until the voice sounds natural.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Tag the clip as dialogue

Select the clip, choose Window > Essential Sound, and click Dialogue.

  2. 02

    Turn on Reduce Noise

Open Repair and tick Reduce Noise. Start low, around 3 to 5, and raise it only as far as you need.

  3. 03

    Remove hum

If you hear a steady electrical hum, tick Reduce Rumble or apply the DeHum effect and set it to 50 Hz or 60 Hz, depending on where the recording was made.

  4. 04

    Or use DeNoise

In the Effects panel, search for DeNoise and drag it onto the clip. In Effect Controls, adjust the amount and listen.

  5. 05

    Compare

Toggle the effect off and on with the fx button in Effect Controls. Too much reduction makes speech sound watery.

  • Noise reduction can't fix clipping or distortion. Re-record if the voice is distorted.

Eddie AI

Do it in Eddie

Eddie cleans up noise when you ask, but the cleaned sound stays in Eddie.

Ask Eddie to clean up the audio. It removes wind, hum, hiss, room noise, traffic, crowd noise and music playing under someone talking, at 18 credits per minute of source. It does not repair distortion or clipping.

The cleaned sound plays in Eddie and in MP4 renders. It does not carry into the Premiere project or XML, which point to your original recordings, so clean the sound in Premiere if you finish there.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
