How to change the volume of a clip in Premiere Pro

Short answer

Select the clip and press G for Audio Gain, then type a value in dB, such as +3 or -6. To change the level over time, Cmd-click or Ctrl-click the clip's volume line to add keyframes and drag them.

In Premiere Pro

  1. 01

    Change the whole clip

Select the clip, press G (Clip > Audio Options > Audio Gain), choose Adjust Gain by, type a value in dB and click OK.

  2. 02

    Use the volume line

Make the audio track taller and drag the white volume line up or down. It shows the level as you drag.

  3. 03

    Change one part

Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click the volume line to add keyframes, then drag between them to dip or raise one section.

  4. 04

    Use Effect Controls

Select the clip and set Volume > Level in Effect Controls for a typed value.

  • Gain changes the clip before effects. The volume line is applied after them.

Do it in Eddie

Ask Eddie to set a clip's level, and it carries into Premiere.

Say "Bring this clip up 3 dB" or "Mute the second clip." The range is -24 dB to +12 dB and it's free. The Premiere project and XML carry it as the clip's Volume Level, and a mute arrives as -96 dB.

Back to Premiere

Open the edit, click Export and choose Premiere. You get a Premiere project (.prproj) or the older Premiere XML. In the desktop app, Send to Premiere Pro builds the edit inside Premiere through Eddie's panel, which the app installs for you.

If you imported the footage through the desktop app, the timeline points at your original camera files, so Premiere relinks to them. If you uploaded on the web or pulled from cloud storage, it points at Eddie's proxy media; relink to those, not to the camera originals.
